Formal notice

Definition

A formal notice is a written, dated demand to pay a precise amount within a precise deadline.

Explanation

In French it is called a mise en demeure. It is the last amicable step before a procedure such as the payment order. It recalls the invoice, its amount, its due date and the reminders already sent, and sets a final deadline. Delivered against a receipt, or sent in a way that leaves a dated trace, it proves the client was warned.

The tone stays factual: no threats, just facts and a date.

Example

Fictional example. A 2,250,000 FCFA invoice is 30 days overdue, chased at D+1, D+7 and D+15. The letter asks for payment within eight days of receipt and states that otherwise the company will start the procedures provided by law. The reminder schedule includes a full template.
